Citizens-Only Voting Amendment

Michiganders now have a chance to make sure that only citizens vote in the next election. Last year, you probably heard the international story about how a Chinese national voted in Ann Arbor. The Secretary of State denied he existed, then said he was the only one, then confirmed there were at least 15 others! This needs to stop.

Unfortunately, the new state law governing voter registration has a massive loophole. Instead of checking citizenship status, anyone who lives in our state can present themselves at a polling place with a water bill or a bank statement and be given a ballot. This is wrong!

We have a chance to fix it with the Citizens-Only Voting Amendment. COVA will require clerks to verify citizenship status before registering someone to vote. Our votes are too important to be left to the honor system. In order to change the law, we need to get petitions circulated and signed. Recent reporting shows that as many as 85% of our voters agree on this issue, so voters are ready to make this change.

To start the work we need to get done, we're having two kickoff meetings for anyone interested. The first meeting is Tuesday, August 19th at 7pm, and will be led by Patty Pozios, one of the regional directors and area captain. The link for registration is here.
